Originally called Messina, East Syracuse has been known by its more geographically descriptive name since before it was incorporated in the early 1880s. The New York Central Railroad's vast rail yard here spurred growth in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but today it's the town's position on I-481, I-690 and I-90 only a short drive from Syracuse Hancock International Airport that fuels continued development.
